The Labor Section provides general counsel and litigation services for the Missouri State Treasurer in his capacity as custodian of the Second Injury Fund and for the Department of Labor and Industrial Relations in its role administering the Fund. The Section similarly provides general counsel and litigation services for the Missouri's Office of Administration, Central Accident Reporting Office (CARO) in defending workers' compensation claims filed against a multitude of state agencies by their employees. 

In 2017, the Labor Section processed 3,790 new claims that were filed against the Fund and 705 new claims filed against CARO, or 4,495 total new claims. They closed 3,929 Fund claims and 739 CARO claims or a total of 4,668 claims in 2017.

The Labor Section also prosecutes cases involving fraud and noncompliance with the Missouri Workers’ Compensation Act, as referred by the Fraud and Noncompliance Unit of the Division of Workers’ Compensation.
