Missouri Supreme Court sets execution date for killer of two St. Louis cab drivers

Jefferson City, Mo. — The Missouri Supreme Court has set an execution date of July 26 for Robert Anthony Murray, convicted of the December 1985 slayings of Jeffrey Jackson and Craig Stewart, two St. Louis cab drivers who were acquaintances of Murray and his brother, William.

Robert and William Murray and a companion robbed the two men at Jackson's apartment and held them and two women captive for almost three hours. The women were sexually assaulted by the Murrays before Robert Murray shot Jackson and Stewart in the back, execution-style. The women escaped during the shootings.

“This was a brutal crime that involved terrorizing the victims for several hours before the murders,” Nixon said. “A jury came back with a recommendation of the death penalty, and Murray's case has been reviewed by several state and federal courts. It is time for justice to be served and this sentence carried out.”
