Former Sikeston police officer sentenced to three concurrent three-year sentences on stealing convictions

Cape Girardeau, Mo. — A former Sikeston police officer was sentenced today to three concurrent three-year prison terms after pleading guilty last month to three felony counts of stealing in connection with the pilfering of funds from a volunteer search and rescue squad.

Douglas A. Brooks, a former sergeant with the Sikeston Department of Public Safety, served as treasurer of the Sikeston Emergency Search and Rescue Squad, beginning in 1995. Brooks admitted to writing out checks payable to himself or to cash on the squad's bank account and taking money intended for deposit to that account over a period from December 1995 through February 1997. Each of the three charges covered amounts of at least $750 that was stolen from the account.

The Attorney General's Office handled prosecution of the case.
