Attorney General's News Release

April 23, 2001

Nixon reminds Missourians of May 1 deadline

Jefferson City, Mo. — Attorney General Jay Nixon today reminded Missourians that May 1 is the deadline to sign up their home telephone numbers to be covered when enforcement of the state's new "No Call" telemarketing law takes effect July 1. Since registration for the free list began in December, more than 345,000 residential phone lines — equating more than 800,000 Missourians — have been placed on the list.

"For their phone numbers to be on the list when enforcement begins this summer, consumers need to sign up by May 1," Nixon said. "Missourians will still be able to put their numbers on the list after that date, but their protection under the law from telemarketers would begin later."

Nixon said registration was quick, simple and free: consumers can sign up online or by calling toll-free 1-866-NOCALL1 (1-866-662-2551).

Telemarketers who are covered by the law will be prohibited from calling numbers on the list after July 1. Those who violate the law can face fines of up to $5,000 per violation.

The Attorney General also repeated his warning against telemarketers selling membership on an "International No Call" list. Nixon is looking into complaints from Missourians who have contacted the Attorney General's Office about a Canadian business calling itself "Peace and Quiet." The business reportedly is soliciting consumers to sign up for the list for a fee of almost $300.

"Don't fall for scams that promise services they can't provide," Nixon said. "The real No Call list is maintained by the Attorney General's Office and is free to join."

Inquiries from consumers should be directed to consumer@ago.mo.gov or 1-800-392-8222 (from within Missouri) or 573-751-3321 (outside Missouri).

All media inquiries should be directed to Press Secretary John Fougere.
