Jefferson City, Mo. — Missourians who do not yet have their home telephone numbers on the state's No Call list have until Nov. 1 to sign up for the edition of the list that takes effect Jan. 1, Attorney General Jay Nixon said today. More than 827,000 phone numbers — representing an estimated 2.1 million Missourians — are currently on list and protected from telemarketing calls. The list is updated quarterly.
"Missourians can treat themselves to peace and quiet during the dinner hour, without the tricks of telemarketers, by signing up for No Call," Nixon said. "It's a quick, easy and free way to greatly reduce the number of telemarketing calls you receive at home."
Consumers can sign up for the Attorney General's No Call list online or by calling toll-free 1-866-NOCALL1 (1-866-662-2551). Missourians who have more than one telephone line at their residences can register all those numbers on the No Call list, Nixon said.
Since the enforcement provisions of the law took effect July 1, Nixon has taken legal action against more than 50 telemarketers for violations of the No Call law and has recovered $430,000 through those legal actions. Telemarketers who are covered by the law and who call phone numbers on the list can be forced to pay up to $5,000 per violation.
Missourians already on the No Call list may file complaints about telemarketing calls by downloading a complaint form or by calling the toll-free number.
Telemarketers can obtain information on how to get a copy of the database containing the telephone numbers on the No Call list. Cost of the database is $25 for each of the six Missouri area codes per quarter. The list is updated four times a year.
