Jefferson City, Mo. — Bursting pipes, collapsed roofs, wrecked cars and high prices may be among the results of this weekend's ice storm, and Attorney General Jay Nixon is reminding consumers to look out for law breakers and con artists.
"While heroes have rushed in to help those in need, there will no doubt be crooks hoping to capitalize on the crisis," Nixon said.
Consumers in Missouri may need home repairs for pipes that have burst or roofs that have caved in under the weight of ice. Body shops will also be busy, as will tree limb and debris removal companies. Nixon offers this advice for consumers to avoid getting ripped off:
Nixon recovered almost $38,000 in restitution for consumers in an alleged price gouging case after a severe ice storm caused widespread power outages in eastern Missouri earlier this winter. Precision Equipment, a Farmington generator dealer, paid $37,952 in consumer restitution and $3,000 in costs to the state to resolve allegations it overcharged consumers as much as $697 per generator.
Consumers who suspect price gouging or other fraud can file a complaint with the Attorney General's Office at ago.mo.gov, or by calling the Consumer Protection Hotline at 1-800-392-8222.
Inquiries from consumers should be directed to consumer@ago.mo.gov or 1-800-392-8222 (from within Missouri) or 573-751-3321 (outside Missouri).
All media inquiries should be directed to Press Secretary John Fougere.
