Nixon leads 34-state settlement to return money to businesses and organizations
December 14, 2006 Attorney General Jay Nixon led a group of 34 states in reaching a settlement with a Nevada company that sent "activation" checks to small businesses, churches and other organizations as a way to start billing them for Internet advertising. Nixon held a news conference on Dec. 14 at Whaley's East End Drug in Jefferson City, showing what the activation checks look like. Whaley's was one of the estimated 14,000 Missouri businesses and organizations that were billed.
Under the agreement, YP Corp. will pay $120,000 for restitution to Missouri businesses and organizations, and is prohibited from using the checks as a marketing tool.
