Nixon encourages Special Olympics athletes from Missouri to "Never give up"
December 29, 2006 Attorney General Jay Nixon saluted the dedication of Special Olympics athletes when he talked to a group of the athletes from Missouri and their families in Jefferson City on Dec. 29. Nixon addressed the athletes, who had gone to the Special Olympics USA National Games last summer in Ames, Iowa, at the request of Jefferson City High School basketball coach David Fox. The Missouri team coached by Fox won the silver medal.
The Special Olympics athletes face many of the same obstacles as other athletes, Nixon said. But their dedication and training to work toward their goals have made them models for everyone, he said, and they should never give up.
Nixon said law enforcement in Missouri has had a long partnership with Special Olympics of Missouri, including the Law Enforcement Torch Run, which raises about $1 million each year for the organization.
