Full board for Black Archives of Mid-America sworn in
January 25, 2007 Preservation and protection of one of the largest collections of artifacts and documents dealing with the African-American experience in the Midwest came an important step closer on Jan. 25 as Attorney General Jay Nixon administered the oath of office to the reconstituted board of the Black Archives of Mid-America in Kansas City.
The Black Archives had been administratively dissolved and the collection was facing numerous other challenges before Nixon held two public hearings last summer. The Attorney General worked with Barbara Peterson, the widow of Black Archives founder Horace Peterson, and other members of a community advisory committee to select members of a full, reconstituted board of directors to provide leadership for the archives. The new board of directors held its first meeting on Jan. 25, and Nixon gave the opening remarks before swearing in the new members. Among the new members of the Black Archives board of directors are (pictured above from left) Crosby Kemper III, Barbara Peterson and Airick West.
