Nixon, KC Mayor Kay Barnes call for end to robo-calls
February 28, 2007 Attorney General Jay Nixon and Kansas City Mayor Kay Barnes renewed the call to cover automated political calls - often called "robo-calls" - under the state's No Call law. The two leaders talked to reporters in the mayor's office on Feb. 28 about the recent spate of robo-calls in the Kansas City mayor's race, in which Mayor Barnes is not a candidate. Nixon said his No Call unit had received several complaints about the calls from Kansas City; during the 2006 election season, more than 600 Missourians on the No Call list filed complaints about robo-calls.
On the same day as the news conference, the Missouri Senate unanimously passed SB 49, a bill to regulate robo-calls. The bill also would place junk faxes and text message ads under the No Call law. The bill now goes to the Missouri House.
