Sacrifice of fallen officers remembered at Law Enforcement Memorial service
May 5, 2007 Attorney General Nixon helped law enforcement officers from around the state remember their fellow officers who died in the line of duty at the 20th Annual Law Enforcement Memorial Service on May 5. The service was held at the Law Enforcement Memorial on the Capitol grounds; Nixon was the guest speaker for the event.
"This ceremony stands as a reminder that in every decade, every generation and every century, there are those who take on the responsibility for the safety of society -- quietly and without fanfare, they face danger every day to protect us," Nixon said.
No Missouri officers died in the line of duty in 2006, a development met with thanks by Nixon and other speakers at the event. The names of two officers, Audrain County Sheriff's Deputy Andy T. Early and St. Louis Police Officer Michael J. Burke, were added to the memorial. Early died in 2006 as a result of injuries from an on-duty motor vehicle accident a decade earlier; Burke died from injuries in 1901 from an on-duty accident that occurred a year earlier.
In the photo above, pipers from the St. Louis County Police Department Pipes and Drums salute their fellow officers who died in the line of duty by playing "Amazing Grace." More photos here.
